Baseball scouting report template
A one-page scouting report on the scale scouts use: each tool graded 20–80 for today and for the future, pitch grades for pitchers, the measured numbers, and room for makeup and a projection. Use it for showcase players, recruits or the kids at your own tryout.
No sign-up, no email. Print as many copies as you need.
| 60 yd / home-1st | Exit velo | Arm velo | Pitch velo | Pop time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
20–30 well below average · 40 below · 50 average · 60 plus · 70 plus-plus · 80 elite. Average means average for the level you are scouting.
What’s on it
- Player details: name, team or school, grad year, position, B/T, height and weight, date seen.
- Position player tools: hit, power, run, arm, field (present and future).
- Pitcher grades from the mound: fastball, curveball, slider, change-up and command.
- Measured: 60-yard, exit velo, arm and pitching velo, pop time.
- Makeup, summary and projection, overall grade, follow-up.
Rather do it on your phone?
TryoutSheet is this sheet on a phone: tap a player’s number, tap a score, film the rep. It works at the field without signal, adds up the stations with your weights, ranks the group, and carries the players you pick into your roster.
How to use it
- Grade against the level you’re scouting for: 50 means average for that level, not average for the field in front of you.
- Present is what the player does today; future is what you expect in two or three years. The gap is the projection.
- Write down what you saw, not what you heard: “3 of 4 throws to second under 2.1” is a scouting note; “good arm” isn’t.
- One report per look. A second report from another day or another scout tells you more than a longer first one.
Questions
What is the 20–80 scouting scale?
The scale pro scouts use: 50 is average, each 10 points is one standard deviation, so 60 is plus, 70 plus-plus and 80 elite; 40 is below average and 20–30 well below.
Is the 20–80 scale useful for youth players?
Use it against the age level: an 80 arm at 14U means elite for 14U. Many coaches use 1–5 at tryouts and keep 20–80 for older players and recruiting.
Where can I keep scouting notes with video?
TryoutSheet keeps clips per player, station and rep, measurables over time and staff-only coach notes on each player’s profile.
