Softball player evaluation form

A report card for one player, for the middle or end of the season. It rates the parts of the game that matter at every level, then asks for what most evaluations skip: what the player does well, the one or two things to work on next, and a goal for next season.

Rather do it on your phone?

TryoutSheet is this sheet on a phone: tap a player’s number, tap a score, film the rep. It works at the field without signal, adds up the stations with your weights, ranks the group, and carries the players you pick into your roster.

How to use it

  1. Fill it in for every player, not just the ones you’re worried about. Families notice.
  2. Rate against the level the player plays at: a 3 is solid for this level, not “average kid”.
  3. Keep “work on next” to one or two things a player can practise, like “stay through the ball to the opposite field”, rather than “hit better”.
  4. Go through it with the player (and a parent, for younger ages) in five minutes after a practice. Hand them the sheet.

Questions

When should I do player evaluations?

Twice is plenty: around mid-season, so there’s time to work on things, and at the end, so the player has goals for the off-season.

Should players see their ratings?

For older players, yes, with the notes. For younger players, lead with the strengths and the next steps and skip the numbers if they’ll upset more than help.

Can I keep these with the player’s tryout scores?

In TryoutSheet each player has a profile with tryout scores, measurables over time, clips and coach notes, so this season’s evaluation sits next to last year’s.
